Some of us will remember from our childhood
how the countryside was just a few decades ago - before intensive
farming and the spread of urban sprawl - when the hedgerows
were a mass of wild flowers, butterflies were common, and
birdsong everywhere. This beautiful part of France brings
those memories back to reality, and when you consider that
there are double the number of plant species present here
than in the UK, you start to have some idea of why it is so
immensely rich in wildlife.
La Vigerie is ideally situated to enjoy
this bounty of nature, being surrounded by a mixture of woodland,
tracks, and lovely unimproved grazing meadows full of wild
flowers. In all 230 different species of plant have been recorded
on our 2 acres of gardens and meadow alone, with rarities
like Deptford Pink, Green-winged and Burnt-tip Orchids, Hairy
Greenweed, Narrow-leaved Hemp-nettle, Annual Knawel, Wall
Bedstraw, and Strapwort present.
