La Vigerie has a superb position in a secluded
spot in the hills just north of the Dordogne river, but is
also very centrally placed for visiting the numerous tourist
attractions and viewing the spectacular scenery that this
part of SW France is rightfully famous. All of the following
can be reached in well under 2 hours, with many only a short
drive away.
A little way upstream is the ancient port
of Argentat, which has some lovely medieval buildings
overhanging the river in the vicinity of the old bridge. Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne,
the nearest town to us (8 km), has a very pretty old quarter,
with the church of St Pierre having one of the most magnificently
sculptured romanesque doorways in France. Just to the
north other lovely unspoilt villages are Curemonte,
with 3 chateaux, Turenne, a hilltop fortress, and Collonges-la-Rouge,
which as its name suggests is constructed wholly from
a local dark red sandstone. Cars are banned from the village,
so you can walk the evocative streets and enjoy the stunning
buildings at will.
